Holy Rood Church, Swinton

A local church serving its community

About Us

Vicar: (Revd Dr) Charles Clapham

Charles has been Priest-in-Charge of the Church of the Holy Rood since 2003.

Charles was born and brought up in Scotland, and studied at the Universities of Manchester and Durham, and at Union Theological Seminary, in New York.

Before training for the priesthood, he worked for two years as an Advice Worker in inner-city Birmingham. Prior to his appointment to Holy Rood, Charles served two curacies in parishes in South Manchester.

Charles is married with one young (and rather noisy) child. His passions include film, music, and Starbucks.

Curate: (Revd) Les Rees

Les joined Holy Rood as a  Non-Stipendiary curate in 2006. Les originally studied law at Leeds University, and worked for many years as a police officer in the Salford area. A local resident, he served for over ten years as a lay reader in the neighbouring parish of St Thomas in Clifton Green.

Following his ordination as an Anglican minister, Les reports that, although as a police officer he knocked on lots of doors, he’s finding it refreshing now to actually be invited in.

Les is married to Wendy, who is also active in the church. He has two grown-up children.

The Parochial Church Council

The PCC is the main governing body of the church. In addition to the clergy, membership includes two Church Wardens, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and a range of representatives from the wider church. The PCC also includes representatives from the parish who serve on the Deanery Synod.  Elections for Church Officers and the PCC are held annually, and all those on the church’s electoral roll are eligible to vote or stand.

The PCC delegates much of its work to a range of sub-committees, including a buildings committee, finance committee, fairs group, worship group, and a co-ordinating committee. Membership of these committees is usually by invitation, but members of the church with particular areas of interest or expertise are always welcome.

Matters of concern to anybody in the church or the local community should normally be raised directly with the Vicar and the two Church Wardens, or with any representative of the PCC.
